WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- The St. Lawrence Seaway will open for the 53rd season at 8 a.m. on March 22nd, but one ship will be passing through several days earlier.

A Canadian ice breaker is scheduled to travel through the section of the Seaway along the New York State border this weekend.

Although warmer weather later this week may melt much of the ice cover, the ship will help break up any thicker concentrations of ice before the system officially opens.

The St. Lawrence Seaway Authority will be holding an opening ceremony for the first ship transit on March 22nd at St. Lambert Lock in Montreal.
